He was a younger son. He is designated "of Fiskwick, Tarleton, Chorley, and Hunsworth, Lancashire; and Drumburgh (in Bowness), Bothel (in Torpenhow), Beaument, and Brunskaith, Cumerland." He was King's esquire, sheriff of Cumberland, kinght of the shire for Lancashire, constable of Liverpool Caslte, master forester of West Derby, steward of the wapentakes of West Derby and Salfordshire in the Duchy of Lancaster; deputy to Edward, duke of York; and member of the guild merchant of the borough of Preston, Lancashire. In 1398 he took part in an armed raid on the manor of Millom, Cumberland, causing great damage. He was a committed supporter of the house of Lancaster. He was present at the battle of Shrewsbury in 1403, where he captured Archibald, earl of Douglas, whom he sold to King Henry IV for a ransom of 900 marks. He was also present at the battles of Harfleur and Agincourt. He was sent as an ambassador to negotiate a treaty with the Scots in 1415. He was fatally wounded in an assault launched just before the fall of Caen, in France.
