Benjamin was born on his parents farm in Adrian. Benjamin lived with his parents until he was 21 years old, and was brought up a farmer, and only received a limited education, his last schooling being at the Raisin Valley Seminary. He attended at the opening of the seminary.
Benjamin married Sabrina Cone of Raisin Township. They had three children. In 1856, Benjamin bought a farm in Rome Township where he lived two years. When his parents decided to move to the city to live with their younge st son Webster, Benjamin moved back to Raisin Township and purchased his father's homestead and lived on the farm where he was born.
In 1872 Benjamin went to Adrian and became a partner of Enos Willett, who ran a grocery store but this only lasted a year and a half. In 1883, he moved to Palmyra and in 1892 he moved to Holloway to be near his daughter In ez. Benjamin and Mary Jane lived with their daughter for the past four years of their lives.
Benjamin was brought up as a Quaker, but in 1867, at the age of 33, he was converted to the Methodist faith and became a consistent member of the Adrian M.E. church. He was one of the foremost if erecting the first Metho dist church of Raisin, and drew the first load of brick upon the ground, and was very active until the building was completed, and was a member of its official board for 14 years as a class leader and trustee. He was also serve d as treasurer for the Lenawee County Horticultural Society for many years.
Benjamin died at the home of his daughter Inez of paralysis. Inez had taken care of her father since the death of her mother in the spring of 1909. Funeral services were held at the Raisin Presbyterian church on Sunday at 2:30 and was buried at Raisin Valley.
