Written for Mary Royse by her grandfather, Aaron Royse in 1806:
My father, Moses Royse, was born June 6, 1700, and lived in the stateof New York; and was married in 1725. He had 2 sons by his first wife,John and Daniel. They both settled in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
He was again married, to my mother, in1732. I was born in 1734, mysister in 1736.
My father was a Hebrew and an Indian Trader.
I was born at a place or country called "The Highlands of New York."My father and mother were going on a journey on horseback through thewilderness when he heard something that made him think the Indianswere near. He sent my mother through a bypath he thought more safe, but in a few minutes he heardher scream. He took me by the arm andset me down in a thicket of brush and said "Keep Still!" But I was sofrightened, I hollowed, and my father caught me again and went inpersuit of mother. But we never saw or heard of her or my sisteragain.
My sister was 6 years old, and I was eight at this time. My father dideverything in his power to find my mother, but in vain. We never heardfrom her again. We lived in the Highlands of New York and followedIndian trading.
I was married in 1759. Moses, the only child of this wife, was born in1761 in the Highlands of New York. His mother died when he was oneyear old.
I was married again in September 1763. When Moses was 14 years old, weall moved to the state of Virginia. We came by water and landed atAlexandria.
