(posted byDebbie Halpenny) This land was contained between three hills; ahill in Danish is called "calfe," "metta" is the word used forbetween, and thus the name of "Metta-Calfe," Metcalfe! It gaveorigin to the coat of arms, which is charged with three blackcalves: what is known as a "canting coat." In 1581 the familymarried into the Talbot family, and she being an heiress broughta large estate, and the crest of the Talbots was adopted.ThisTalbot crest is still used by the family." From information inthe Gen. of Virginia Fam. v. 3, page 676 from the research ofDr. Claudius H. Mastin, of Mobile, Alabama Version 2 When inthe 12th century, the newly formed counties of Westmoreland,Cumberland and the West riding of Yorkshire were formed, theboundaries ran along the tops of the ranges of hills passingalong Holme Fell, Middleton Calf Top, ("The Calf" almost 2,200feet high is the tallest hill in West Yorkshire, almost at thewestern boundary of the county), and Cragg Hill. The occupier ofMiddleton Calf Top then was William de Dent (Dent is a villageat the foot of "The Calf" mountain)who became known as WilliamMedecalf de Dent, Chief Forester of Wensleydale withLangstrothdale. So the origin of the surname Metcalfe in all itsvariations of spelling, is said to be derived from MiddletonCalf Top. Three black calves on the crest but that it has aWhite Yorkshire Rose on it as well. Metcalfes own/owned STUDLEY ROYAL Castle, YORKSHIRE . Head offamily: MARQUIS OF RIPON
