Sloan, Sloane, Slowan, from Ireland O'Sluaghain, descendant of Sluaghdain, probably a varient of O'Slaughdahaigh, from the Irish personal name Slaugadach, "leader of a military expedition" appears as the leader of the Bishop of St. Andrews host about 1128. As Slgepah he appears as a witness in King David's letter respecting the consecration of Robert, Bishop of St. Andrews, at York, 1128. An earlier Sluagadach went forth to Rome about 966-971. Twelfth century Scots migrated to North Ireland. Sloans of Antrim and Down are of Scotish origin. First Sloan families in East Ulster No. Ireland. Gaelic Sloans moved to Scotland from 1500-1700. For religious reasons they were banished from Scotland, where their Protestant views irked the religious leaders. Thousands were transplanted into Ireland where they remained long enough to get an opportunity to come to the New World. Many settled in Iredell County, NC.
In the early 1700s four Sloan brothers, John, Robert, Richard and Archibald came to American. John went to Clinton, SC where he lived to be 113 yr old. Robert settled in PA. Archibald settled in Iredell County, NC. A son John moved into KY.
