"In reagrd to the crakeplace family, the name derives from the Viking word krakr which means crow. In the parish of Dean is Crakeplace Hall, and on a stone above the doorway is this legend: 'Christopher Crakeplace built the same When he was servant to Bron Altham.' In the center is a shield bearing the image of a bird, probably a crow, the emblem of the Crakeplace family. The name seems to have died out in the middle of the eighteenth cerntury, at least in that area."
