Berenger was the last and most illustrious of the Royal Provençal Counts; and, even had he not been the sovereign of the land of song, his own verses would have entitled him to a distinguised rank among the Troubadour poets. He was relatively impoverished count who could provide little dowry for his four daughters, who despite that became the Queen of England, Queen of France, Queen of the Germans and Queen of Naples and Sicily.
