Sylvester Moses Woodfin was born in Henrico County, Virginia, in 1820
where his great-great grandfather, James Woodfin was born in 1720. Moses
had 2 sister, Mary Steel and Sarah Hardy. Moses and family migrated to
Georgia where he married Mary Ann (Polly) Hutto in Butts County on
January 12, 1838.
Moses and wife moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama in 1839 and settle
in Coosa County in 1841 west of Rockford at the fork of Swamp and
Hatchett Creeks.
Moses was a farmer and carpenter. He built a clothes press (armoire)
in 1870 which is still in use by a great-great-great-great granddaughter,
Tanner Harris.
Moses and Mary Ann had nine children: George; William, my great
grandfather; Moses, Jr. born October 8, 1854 and died January 24, 1892,
Married Alice McKay, then Sally McKay; Lydia married George Bates; Mandy
married John Thomas Burks; James married Roxie Culver, then Cora Jacks;
Ann married Emmett Palmer; John Holly; and Charles.
William (Bill) Woodfin, the second son of Moses, was born in Coosa
County on October 16, 1852. He found his bride, Cynthia Belle Salter, in
the nearby Salter community. Bell was born August 8, 1853. Probably
they attended school, church and community events through childhood. They
married in 1887 and reared their children in the same community.
1. Roxie died young.
2. Charlie was born in 1878, married Marinda Melton; and had seven
children: Sponnie, Nolen, Madaline, Larue, Laverne, Melton, and Jean.
Charlie was a herb doctor.
3. Press, bron 1880, married Minnie Allen and they had nine children:
Huffman, Roy, Gertrude, Vonnie, Claude, Clyde, Allen, Arlene, and William
Edward. Press was an outdoorsman, liked hunting and fishing. He was a
great storyteller.
4. Lee was born 1882, married Ora Jackson, and had five children:
Beatrice, Elvis, Irene, Billie and Jeanette. Jolly Lee attracted people
with his humor and funny stories.
5. Mae was born 1884 and died May 19, 1910 just before her wedding.
6. Moses Jackson (Jack), born 1886, married Dollie Tippett, two sons,
Howard and Sherrill; then married Lucy Mitchell and they had daughters
Lorraine, Dean, Virginia and Helen. Jack was an educator, neat and
orderly in lifestyle and clothes.
7. Laura, born 1889, married Ernest Hatchett, had six children: Minta,
Lola, Harold, Roland, Kate, Owen Woodfin. After Ernest's death she moved
to Montgomery with children and became an expert seamstress. Laura was a
quiet, gracious lady.
8. Mattie Elizabeth (Lizzie) born January 9, 1892 and Robert Archie Embry
(born November 25, 1884) were married December 4, 1910. They had four
children: Ralph Bernard, born October 6, 1911, married Virginai Fincher,
and had two children. William Hewell born April 19, 1914 married Nellie
Claybrook, 2 children. Jessie Marie born July 15, 1917, married Archie
Harris, 2 sons. Mary Oliva born July 16, 1923 married Willliam Ivy Byrd
October 15, 1944. One son.
Lizzie loved God and her family, liked to entertain and travel. She
had an outgoing personality and had many friends.
9. Curtis E. born Oct 1, 1896, married Evie Terrell and had four
children, Morris, Shelton, Rolene and Joseph. Curtis had the gift of
hospitality with his calm personality.
Bill and Belle Woodfin had a happy, close-knit family who shared good
and bad times together since all settled in Coosa County area. The
children of Bill and Belle lived simple lives and they are proud of their
ancestry and have passed on a great legacy to their families.
Belle is remembered for her sweet smiles and encouraging words and
would surprise her grandchildren with her extraordinary spelling and
