"KILLING OF SUMMERLIN
The following account of the affair is from the Troy Journal:
Our little town has just been in stir over the excitement of the
shooting of our night-watchman, by one Mr. Barksdale, which took place
two days ago. The difficulty occurred about the nightman being accused
by Mr. Barksdale of having been on one occasion too drunk to be on duty,
which Mr. Summerlin, watchman, denied with oath attached, when Mr.
Barksdale fired on him twice. The first shot passed through Mr.
Summerlin just below his heart and perhaps through the upper part of
bowels and out the left side of his backbone. He lived a little over
twenty-four hours. His father took the remains to Bradleyton to be
buried.
He leaves an aged father and several brothers and sister, a wife and
six little children to mourn his untimely death.
Mr. Barksdale was arrested and taken to jail to await his trial. He
went off with the officers one night and Mr. Summerlin was carried along
the same road on the next night, one dead and the other alive, both going
to meet the impending judgement before them.
Oh! How sad are some of the happenings of life. 'In the midst of
life we are in death.' " (1)
