Fay Staples Newman was a graduate of Judson College, Marion, Alabama.
During her first years of college, records show that she studied rhetoric
and classics, Latin, math, chorus and sight singing, drawing, painting,
and house keeping. Upon graduation, she became the Home Demonstration
Agent in Coosa Co., AL, for four years. Afterwards, she taught school,
was homemaker and was very active in both the Mt. Olive and Wetumpka
communties. Overall, she was very talented, energetic, and beloved lady.
On 14 Feb 1925, Fay's sister, Sara (Mrs. W. C. Oates) died leaving a
baby, William Wyatt Oates, three hours old; and a little girl, Ruby
Maxine Oates, fifteen months old. Vernie and Fay cared for the children
until 30 Aug 1932, when they let them to live with their father at
Greenville, SC.
Fay died on 8 Oct 1933, having never gotten over the death of John Paul.
Bill was only nine years old at the time.
