Thomas de Berkeley, in the 8th of Henry III (1223-4), upon giving his two nephews as pledges for his fidelity, had restitution of Berkeley Castle. His lordship m. about the year 1217, Joan, dau. of Ralph de Somery, Lord of Campden, co. Gloucester, and niece of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, and dying, aged seventy-six, November 29, 1243, left issue, Maurice, his heir; Thomas, d. s. p.; Robert; Henry, d. s. p.; William; Richard; and one dau. Margaret, wife of Sir Anselm Basset.
