Ralph Crophull is the first of a family of considerable antiquity, and he is mentioned with honor in the time of Edward II, when he had committed to him the counties of Nottingham and Derby, to farm the issue thereof, during the king's pleasure. Also in the ninth of the same reign 1316, he had custody of the counties of Salop and Stafford, with the Castle of Stafford committed to his care; and in the 12th Edward II, he was appointed escheater of this side of Trent. In first of Edward III he was possessed, along with Maud, his wife, of Bonyngton and Sutton on Co. Notts., with view of frank-pledge and other liberties, in said Townships.
