Maud was born in 1148 in Pembroke, Wales. Maud's father was John (The Marshal) Fitz Gilbert and her mother was Sibyl de Salisbury. Her paternal grandparents were Gilbert Marshal and Unknown de Venuz; her maternal grandparents were Walter (The Sheriff) Fitz Edward and Sibyl Chaworth . She had four brothers and a sister, named John, William, Anselm, Henry and Margaret. She was the third youngest of the six children.-
