All Hallows Parish (also called South River Parish) took in the area of South River Hundred and part of West River Hundred. It is basically the area south and west of South River, bounded to the south by St James Parish. All Hallows Church is located today near Davidsonville. The orginial church was apparently erected near Birdsville.
He was willed a 300 acre tract of land known as Charles' Purchase situated on the north side of Gunpowder River, and a second tract of land identified as that plantation on which his sister, Hester Groce, was then living, to him after her decease.
His younger son, Capt. John Gassaway married Elizabeth Lawrence - grandaughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Ewen) Talbott. John inherited from his father 300 acres on the Gunpowder River, and after his sister, Hester Groce's decease, the land she lived on and fifty pounds and furniture. John was buried 2, Sept.,1697, in the parish of All Hallows, Anne Arundel co. (Parish Record p. 6) John & Elizabeth had one son - Nicholas Gassaway, b. 6 Feb., 1696.
Nicholas Gassaway (son of John & Elizabeth) sold his interest in his father's estate on South River to his uncle, Maj. Thomas Gassaway, and removed, to Queen Caroline parish.
The rent rolls for Anne Arundel County, Maryland show that John and his brother, Thomas Gassaway, were joint possessors of 160 acres of land called Bessendon on the south side of South River.
John Gassaway died intestate. His widow, Elizabeth, was granted letters of administration 10 Aug 1698 with Richard Galloway and William Richardson as her security. Warrenty was granted to John Chappell and John Gaile to appraise the estate of her deceased husband. The inventory was recorded 20 Oct 1898 but the estate was not settled. Elizabeth married John Rigbie and died in 1700 leaving an infant daughter named Elizabeth Rigbie. It was her husband Peter Galloway, who assumed the administration of the estate of John Gassaway years later, 27 January 1717.
