Bernard was a bricklayer (mason) who arrived in Acadia in 1641 from the town of Bouvoir-Sur-Mer in Vende, France. He was
first in the service of adventuer-explorer Charles de la Tour, but later served under Charles D'Aulney at Fort Jemseq. When
Charles de la Tour was recalled to France in 1645, Bernard returned with him, but his children, remained in Acadia.
