  Note: The Hoo's were a wealthy family credited with interests in quarrying, mining and glass making during the 17th century. Reportedly, they came to England with William the Conqueror, though the dates for Sir Robert here suggest they were in England well before the conquest.
  MEANING OF THE SURNAME
  The name Hoo or Howe refers to a high place or hill. The original name of the family was De La Howe meaning "from the hill."
