NICK: "Le Vieux" ("The Old")
NOTE:
Richard II 'le Bon' 'l'Irascible' DE NORMANDIE. Born in 958. Mistress. In 996 Duc de Normandie. Miltary/Fought: in 997 Normandie. Revolt in Normandy: pillaging, murders, fires. Richard put down the insurrection in a terrible manner: impaling some, burning some alive - thrown into pots of melted lead; mutilating others: cutting off their hands and feet, gouging their eyes, cutting their tongues. "The worst possible beginning to a reign" (Mabire, Les Ducs de Normandie.). Married Judith DE RENNES circa 1000; estimate. Miltary/Fought: circa 1013. Richard got angry with Odon, count of Chartres, a brother-in-law. Odon called on the king of France for help, and once again Normandy was threatened with invasion. Richard looked for help from fellow Vikings. At the head of the army coming to his aid was Olaf of Norway, whom Richard later, in thanks, offered to have baptised. Olaf became such an ardent Christian that he was later canonized Saint Olaf (Mabire, Les Ducs de Normandie.). Miltary/Fought: circa 1015 Nievre. Richard went on an expedition to help Bouchard, count of Melun, attack Landry, count of Nevers (Ibid.). Married Estrith (----) between 1018 and 1020 (Linklater, Conquest of England.); "Cnut, it is said, gave his sister Estrith in marriage to Robert - Estrith who later married earl Ulf of Denmark - and Robert sent her home again." "No confirmation can be found of the story." Married unknown (Poppa?) (----). Died on 23 Aug 1026 Fécamp, Normandie (Musset, Maillefer and Bouvris, Pouvoir normand.).
