MARRIED: ABT. 1725 in ENGLAND
NOTE:
Prob. bur. in Alamance Cem. nr. Greensboro, NC. or with some of Enos' family in Randolph Co.
Sources: (For James, Mary and their progeny) JPA, HWC, HCC, HWILKES, IGI, USNA, LCD, CMK, Coffey Bible, BSGR, HINSHAW, SHAW, personal knowledge, many family members and researchers, listed in "Sources." Death: his gravestone in Alamance Presbyterian Church Cemetary, near Greensboro, NC. Name spelled "Blear" on stone. Her burial site is not known.
His will, rec. Book A, p. 28, Guilford Co. Registry, written 5 Mar 1776, probated May 1776 in Guilford Court. Lists w. Mary, c. John & Agnes. Agnes was underage. A farmer & miller, he was 70 when he wrote the will. James and Mary evidently emmigrated about 1725-1730, probably to Philadelphia, settled in nearby Bucks County, moved to Augusta Co. (Rockbridge aft. 1778),
VA, thence Guilford Co., NC, near Jamestown, probably in early 1760's. I have long suspected that there were more children born to them than just these three, and include a James under them based on anecdotal information. WOOD: There may have been a dau. b. before Colbert, whose daughter mar. John Day
(6 Sep 1716, MD - abt 1790, Burke Co. NC). They fathered Nicholas Day, Sr., who mar. (1)_____ Blair, abt 1755, (2) Grace Angelly in Burke Co. in 1800. (Cites DAR record.) His will (1815) lists c. Nicholas, Jr., John, Colbert, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, and Isabelle. Elizabeth mar. Elias, son of Ambrose Powell, who was
the g-father of Confederate General Ambrose Powell Hill, for whom Ft. A.P. Hill in Virginia is named. Powells, Hills, Days, and Blairs intermarried extensively, and those names are interwoven throughout the history of this Blair line. Some sources list James' father as Freeman, S/O John & (2nd w.) Elizabeth Freeman Blair, this John S/O William Blair "of Farmingham." One such is "Historical Sketches of Alexander County" (NC), prepared by Robert S. Echerd, Taylorsville
NC in 1947, (Alexander Co. Library, Taylorsville). Some of these sources also suggest that Freeman was the father of the John Blair of Guilford Co. who mar. Jean Gamble and later moved to TN, making James & John brothers. Another source lists his parents as Samuel & Martha Campbell Lyle Blair. I know of no documentation supporting either possibility, and a preponderance of anecdotal information appears to discount these possible connections. Other information in Mr. Echerd's paper is accurate, however, and supported by other research.
