‌James S. and Matilda J. were married in a religious ceremony on August 28th, 1879 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  They had five sons and five daughters, named Granville Clifton, John L., Lewis Thomas, Charles K., Elisha Edward, Louise, Mallie Elizabeth, Martha Katherine, Mary Jane and Elkaney.
