  Oral tradition claims his wife left him with the financial help of Lucinda Phipps Johnson, fleeing to Montana with the couple's four children. Eliza Jane Phipps Sloan and her offspring do appear
  in later records for Gallatin Co, MT. After 1870, however, I have found no further record of her husband, suggesting that he died rather than that the couple separated
