Jeremiah
Jeremiah (jèr´e-mì´e) or Jeremias, book of the OLD TESTAMENT, 24th in the
Authorized Version, 2d of the Major PROPHETS. It tells of the career of
Jeremiah, a prophet who preached (c.628-586 B.C.) in Jerusalem. His
message was a summons to moral reform, personal and social, backed by
threats of doom. Jeremiah was allowed to stay in Jerusalem after its fall
to Babylon (586 B.C.), and continued prophesying in Egypt. The prophecies
in the book were arranged by his secretary Baruch, and are not in strict
chronological order. They include prophecies against Gentile nations and
well-known Messianic passages (in 14, 23, 30, 32).
