(Colonel) Dr. Jack Shackleford, father of Col. S.W. Shackleford, No. 1314
in Virginia Cousins who married Susan Adelaide Sherrod, daughter of No.
556-3-B in Virginia Cousins, commanded the "Red Rovers" in the Texas
Revolution, and who witnessed the massacre of his command at Goliad, was
taken prisoner, and kept two years confined in the City of Mexico. Only
three of the fifty-two men in the company escaped. The Mexicans spared
his life on account of his skill as a physician, and he made his escape
by the assistance of a Mexican woman. Col. Shackleford's brother, W.J
Shackleford, was among the slain, as was also Whitfield Brooks, No. 1325.
