  Nathan Hunt Murphey was born about 1804, probably in Michigan, to Mr. and Mrs. Murphey (his mother's name being Ovey or Oney).  On 20 November 1831 Nathan Hunt married Martha Barbara Kerr, a Rockbridge County, Virginia girl (b. abt. 1807) who had moved with her family to Miami County, Ohio in the 1820’s.  Nathan’s two brothers, William and James, at some point headed for Missouri.  His sister Ancey (perhaps Nancey) drowned in the river behind their Ohio homestead.  His sister Offa was scalped.  His sister Polly married a Compton and it is said in the Murphy family that "Polly Murphy Compton was Aruna Compton’s grandmother."  In the search for the ever-elusive parents of Nathan Hunt Murphy his marriage to Martha Barbara was found in the Miami County, Ohio records.  Nathan and Martha Barbara settled in Pulaski County, Indiana (Mull Cemetery appears to be a favorite resting place for Murphys et.al.)  In a further search of the Miami County records, Troy Lot #95 appears with some frequency.  In 1818, an Edward Murphy bought or received the deed.  In 1841, Allen and Elmira Murphy, James and William Murphy, and Nathan H. Murphy transferred or sold it.  In 1842, Runion Compton must have had the deed in hand, because he sold or transferred Troy Lot #95.  Runion’s marriage to Mary Murphy in 1818, is found in Miami County as well.  It seems that Nathan H. purchased 150 acres for $2500 in Pulaski County, Indiana; so he probably needed the money from the Ohio properties.  In searching the Pulaski County, Indiana Census records, Runyon Compton is listed as a fifty-six year old farmer, born in New Jersey and worth $2500 dollars.  Also in household number 297, are wife Mary, 48 years old and Edward, 24, and George, age 6.  Oney Murphy, aged 78, resides in the same household.  Often Polly became a nickname for Mary; so perhaps Mrs. Murphey's one surviving daughter did indeed marry a Compton.  Troy Lot #95 must have some family connection.  Perhaps Mary Murphey is Polly; daughter to Oney and Mr. Murphey (maybe Edward), sister to Nathan Hunt, William & James, and the two little girls who died in the Ohio Territory when it was still a frontier.
