Orphaned at the age of 15, the elder Burns emigrated to Canada in 1831 and thence to Nashville, TN in 1836, where he attained a prominent business career as President of the Nashville and Chattanooga, as well as the Nashville and Northwestern
Railroads, Director of The American First and Third National Banks of Nashville, and Director of the Nashville Commercial Insurance Company.
