Faris in "Plantagenet Ancestry", p. 277 says that John de Welles, 3rd Lord
Welles, married Maud, probable daughter of William de Ros, 2nd Lord Ros of
Helmesley; one of John and Maud's children was John de Welles, 5th Lord
Welles, b. 1352. Faris also states he is a descendant of Charlemagne.
In the article on "Welles" in "The Complete Peerage" xii(2), 441 it ponts out that
the parents of John de Welles (who was born in 1334) died by Feb 1344/5. "John's wardship was granted, 17 Mar. 1344/5, to his presumed mother-in-law, Margery, widow of William (de Ros), 2nd Lord Ros (of Helmsley)." The post-nuptial settlement of his marriage to Maud was also in that year, 1344/5 while he was a minor. It does seem likely that Margery wed her ward to her
daughter.
