founder of the Amorian dynasty of Byzantine emperors (820-67). As
Ostrogorsky writes, "a rough soldier whose lack of educatio was a source
of derision to the cultured Byzantines" According to one tradition,
Michael's grandfather was a Jew who had been converted to Christianity. [Ref:
