Peter de Ludgershale = Peter the Forester
E-mail from Douglas Richardson : In a recent posting, referen ce was made to Geoffrey Fitz Piers, Earl of Essex, and to his fa ther, Piers de Lutegareshale. Since about 1900, historians hav e been modernizing the name Piers as Peter. Consequently, it i s more appropriate to refer to these men as Geoffrey Fitz Pete r and Peter de Lutegareshale. As for Peter de Lutegareshale , I have found a reference to him as Peter the Forester and as s uch I presume he held the position as forester of the royal fore st of Ludgershale, Wiltshire. I imagine with a bit of detectiv e work, Peter the Forester's family and ancestry can be traced . In addition to modernizing the name Piers to Peter, I als o recommend using the modern spelling of Ludgershale.
As previously pointed out, Peter the Forester's wife, Maud, wa s not a Mandeville. My research suggests that either Peter or h is wife, Maud, was a sibling of Roger Fitz Geoffrey and his bro ther, Robert, who were knights and chief tenants of the Earls o f Salisbury. This would explain the appearance of the names , Geoffrey and Robert, among Peter and Maud's children. If corr ect, then Geoffrey Fitz Peter, Earl of Essex, obtained his give n name from a grandfather named Geoffrey.
Much more research is required to find all the answers. I fee l certain that the ancestry of Geoffrey Fitz Peter can be unrave lled if someone has the time and patience to do it. I'm tire d of copying inaccurate and incomplete information from secondar y sources, especially for this family.[MARSHALL.FTW]
