  • The Florents are not one of the strongest families in the Reach, being able to call no more than 2,000 swords to their banner, but they have made ambitious marriage ties. They often boast of having a superior claim to Highgarden and the Reach than House Tyrell, and even among the Tyrells some think it may be true. The current lord of the house is Alester Florent, wed to Lady Melara of House Crane. She has given him three children, his unknighted heir Alekyne, his daughter Melessa wed to Lord Randyll Tarly, and his daughter Rhea, wed to Lord Leyton

    The Florents of Brightwater Keep were originally sworn bannermen of Highgarden by virtue of a blood tie to House Gardener, the old Kings of the Reach.  As Lord of Brightwater Keep, Lord Alester followed the Tyrells in declaring allegiance for King Renley at the outbreak of the War of the 5 Kings -- although his niece, Selyse, was married to King Stannis.
    
    After Renley's death, Lord Alester switched allegiance to King Stannis, bringing with him all the strength of Brighwater Keep, and King Stannis deemed him his Hand.  When King Stannis' fleet was defeated at the Battle of Blackwater, Lord Alester attempted to negotiate a peace with King Joffrey of the Iron Throne -- negotiations which were considered treasonous by King Stannis.  The King gave Lord Alester to the red priestess Melisandre, who burned him as a sacrifice to R'hllor.
    
    The Florents were also deemed traitors by King Joffrey on the Iron Throne for their support of Stannis and the rebellion.  King Joffrey then awarded Brightwater Keep to Ser Garlan Tyrell.
