    The Arryns are descended from the Kings of Mountain and Vale, one of the oldest and purest lines of Andal nobility in the Seven Kingdoms.  They ruled for centuries until they bent the knee to Aegon the Conqueror. Their seat is the Eyrie, a small but unassailable castle high on a mountain. 
    
    Lord of the Eyrie and Warden of the East,  Lord Jon Arryn came to great prominence when he was the first great magnate to rebel against the Mad King, Aerys, when Aerys demanded from him the heads of his two wards, Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark. Ser Jon led the Vale to war alongside Robert, Eddard, and Ser Hoster Tully, whose daughter, Lysa, he married after the rebellion.  During the war, his cousin Ser Denys Arryn, the darling of the Vale, was killed by young Lord Connington.
    
    Ser Jon Arryn then became Robert’s Hand when King Robert assumed the throne after the Targaryens were overthrown.  He served as Hand until his mysterious death. Old enough to have been grandfather to a teenaged girl 15 years prior to the start of Game of Thrones, he died in his late 60s or perhaps even his early 70s.  After his death, House Arryn took no part in the War of the Five Kings, hoding back it's strength to protect the Vale of Arryn.
    
    Jon is survived by his son and heir, the sickly boy Robert Arryn, and his wife Lady Lysa of House Tully.  Lady Lysa is rumored to have slain her husband with a shovel - at the order of the House of Lannister, or for her own reasons.
