James William Chessor

  • According to John Will Chessor, James William Chessor and the Coble family loaded up their ox carts and moved from Buncombe County, North Carolina to Hickman County, Tennessee, around 1810. He settled on Sulphur Creek at the confluence of Hurricane Branch.
    
    James William Chessor's first marriage was to Bessie Cavender; his second to Elizabeth Green Bates. James and Bessie had at least 5 children: Polly, Adam, Rachel, Samuel, and Susan.
    
    James Chessor fought in the War of 1812. His obituary in The Hickman Pioneer states that he was "one of the brave defenders of New Orleans in 1815."
    
    There are two markers for James William Chessor. The newer marker, a government marker erected in 1946, is located on the far left side of what is approximately the 33rd row in the cemetery. The older marker is located one row behind, and approximately two plots to the right. It is unclear which stone marks the actual burial place.
    
    According to his headstone, James William Chessor died
    September 3, 1879. However, an obituary for him appeared in the May 3, 1878 edition of The Hickman Pioneer that stated he died on April 13, 1878, at the age of 95.
