THE CHILDREN OF DAVID JONES, SON 0F FRANCIS
SAMUEL JONES
Samuel Jones (11?15?1802)?(9?8?1865) was the son of David and Sally Jones. Samuel inherited the plantation at Vandemere Creek at the death of his mother. This is where Samuel Jones spent his life, mak ing a living as a merchant. We learned that he owned and operated a general merchandise store at Big Vandemere Creek from information found in the N.C. Archives (a notice to the debtors and creditor s of Henry Jones, deceased, was placed in Samuel Jones' store). It is quite apparent from available papers concerning his business dealings that Samuel was an educated man, at least more than the aver age. We might note here that there is a wealth of information concerning his property in the N.C. Archives, Craven County Estate Records.
In 1825, Samuel Jones married Johanna Lincoln (1803)?(6?9?1841). Samuel and Johanna were buried in the cemetery at Big Vandemere Creek. The inscription on her gravestone, as well as his, is still quit e visible. (See Chapter I, Part I, for information on early Jones cemeteries.) Shortly after marriage, Samuel and Johanna built a home west of Vandemere Creek, about 200 yards west of the cemetery. (I nformation from J. Alfred Mayo, Sr., born 1888, who can distinctly remember the home.) Samuel's second wife was Aseneth Ives.
According to the 1850 Craven County census there were eight children living in the household of Samuel and Aseneth Jones. Four of these were children of Samuel's previous marriage to Johanna. Accordin g to tapes of Miss Nellie Fentress, a daughter, Susan, had married and was no longer living at home. Possibly there were others who were grown and left home by 1850. The five known children of Samue l and Johanna are: Caroline, born 1826, who married Stephen
