THE CHILDREN OF DAVID JONES, SON 0F FRANCIS
SAMUEL JONES
Samuel Jones (11?15?1802)?(9?8?1865) was the son of David and Sally Jones. Samuel inherited the plantation at Vandemere Creek at the death of his mother. This is where Samuel Jones spent his life, making a living as a merchant. We learned that he owned and operated a general merchandise store at Big Vandemere Creek from information found in the N.C. Archives (a notice to the debtors and creditors of Henry Jones, deceased, was placed in Samuel Jones' store). It is quite apparent from available papers concerning his business dealings that Samuel was an educated man, at least more than the average. We might note here that there is a wealth of information concerning his property in the N.C. Archives, Craven County Estate Records.
In 1825, Samuel Jones married Johanna Lincoln (1803)?(6?9?1841). Samuel and Johanna were buried in the cemetery at Big Vandemere Creek. The inscription on her gravestone, as well as his, is still quite visible. (See Chapter I, Part I, for information on early Jones cemeteries.) Shortly after marriage, Samuel and Johanna built a home west of Vandemere Creek, about 200 yards west of the cemetery. (Information from J. Alfred Mayo, Sr., born 1888, who can distinctly remember the home.) Samuel's second wife was Aseneth Ives.
According to the 1850 Craven County census there were eight children living in the household of Samuel and Aseneth Jones. Four of these were children of Samuel's previous marriage to Johanna. According to tapes of Miss Nellie Fentress, a daughter, Susan, had married and was no longer living at home. Possibly there were others who were grown and left home by 1850. The five known children of Samuel and Johanna are: Caroline, born 1826, who married Stephen Muse: Susan, born circa 1829, who married John R. McCotter; Sarah Ann, born 1835, who married John R. McCotter; Elijah, born 1838; and John, born 1841. In 1841, the same year John was born, Johanna died.
Sarah Jones (3?10?1835)?(9?22?1909) was the only child of Samuel and Johanna for whom we are able to
follow up to later generations. She married John R. McCotter (10?24?1825)?(11?19?1910), son of Hezikiah and Dorcas Riggs McCotter. Hezikiah and Dorcas lived between Maribel and Cash Corner in the house on the present C.K. McCotter cattle farm. The kitchen part of the house was the original home, but over the years more rooms were added and the house was remodeled several times.
John R. McCotter had been married twice prior to marrYing Sarah Ann. The first marriage was to Maple Jones (see Chapter III, Part I, Smith Jones), the second to Susan Jones, sister of Sarah Ann. There were no children of either of these marriages.
Sarah Ann Jones and John R. McCotter were married in 1851. So far as can be determined, they lived in the home with Dorcas McCotter and later built a new home nearby. They had the following children:
1. Susan McCotter b 1852 m. John C. Muse in 1874 Children: 1 Leona Muse m. D.C. McCotter and had sons D.C. Jr. and Muse Martha (Marty) McCotter b 1854 m. Louis Fowler Children: (1) Lillian Fowler m. Sarah and John R. McCotter are buried in the McCotter -Fentress Cemetery located off the old road in front of the old Hezikiah and Dorcas McCotter homeplace. Also buried there are Salina Riggs Mayo (half-sister to Dorcas), Moses Fentress, Sarah Fentress, and Laura Fentress Hooker. There are many other graves, but no stones with names.
