Maria was born in 1865 in Aruba.  Maria's father was Eugenio Gallardo Scholten and her mother was Aleida Celestina Gómez. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Anthon, Josef, Pieternella, Ricarda and Carmelita.  She was the oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 93 in 1958 in Aruba.
