Jan was born on December 6th, 1884 in Aruba.  Jan's father was Eustachius Flanegin and his mother was María Marcelina Vrolijk. He had eight brothers and eight sisters, named Juan, Lourens, Cajus, Domingo, Pedro, Ciriaco, Teolindo, Mario, Cecilia, Sarafina, Petrona, Christina, Clemance, Maria, Ruperta and Wilhelmina.  He was the sixth oldest of the seventeen children.  He died at the age of 44 on October 6th, 1929 in Aruba.
