Roy SAUNDERS

  • I knew Maureen's mother & father, Jean and Roy. Jean lived next door to me in Bromley (her mother was my godmother) and was introduced to Roy by my mother's sister, Dorothy who married Roy's brother John in about 1948. I knew all the SAUNDERS family butlost touch when my Aunt Dorothy died in 1983. I remember Linda and Maureen being born. I cannot help with her whereabouts now but know they lived in the Chatham area and I believe moved down to the coast in the 80s sometime.
    I haven't had contact with Jean or Roy since the mid eighties and know that Roy was not in good health then. Jean's mother was always known as Topsy so I am afraid I don't know her real christian name. She lived at 72 Liddon Road Bromley. Jean had a brother Norman and elder sister Milly. Roy was brought up by his grandmother (whose christian name I don't know but her husband was known as Son). Roy's real mother was Rose SAUNDERS who he had always thought of as his sister. He only found out when Granny SAUNDERS died. The other children of Son and his wife were Charlie, Sid, Bob, John and one other whose name I can't remember. There was only a few years difference in age between John and Roy. Rose married and had two more children Marian and David. They lived in a council house in East Farleigh. I don't know their surname.     My Aunt''s maiden name was May. She was born in St. Just Cornwall. John and her were married about 1947 in Boxley Church. He was a lot younger than her.

    Roy Saunders was born in Mereworth. His father was supposed to have been 'the son' of the owner of the house where Rose was 'in service'.Rose was never married to him. Roy was collected as a baby by Robert Saunders on his bicycle from Boxley and taken home and brought up by Martin and Susanna.{a journey of about 20miles each way}.  Roy found out who his mother was when he got married in 1951. Roy Saunders trained as a chef when he left school, not sure if he was in the Services then.  [Source: Susan Davies]
