Thomas Fleming

  • Thomas Flemming was born in Waddleton, Oxfordshire, Englandcirca 1797.   On the 23 April 1816 he was tried at Oxford for larceny and was sentenced to seven years transportation. He arrived in Sydney aboard the  " Sir William Bensley"  in 1817 and transferred to Hobart aboard the " Elizabeth Henriette ."
    Thomas married Ann Jane Griggs, a colony-born Wesleyan-Methodist in St John's Church at Launceston on the 28 March 1825.
    Thomas Flemming received his free certificate on the 18 Dec 1825.
    In 1829 Thomas Flemming built the Tunbridge Wells Inn at Blackman's River upon 60 acres of land which he purchased shortly after his marrage.
    The Tunbridge Wells Inn was sold to Hollis in 1830, and Thomas and Anne moved to Oatsland, where, according to the census of 1842 , they owned and occupied a brick house in Dulverton Street, and had two assigned servants.
    Thomas Flemming died in Oatsland on  25 March 1870, aged 72.  His wife anne survived hin by ten years dying on the 29 August 1880, aged 70.   Both are buried in a Wesleyan-Methodist cemetery in Wellington Street  ,Oatlands.
