John was born on October 5th, 1859 in 7 Alfred Plc, Southwark. John's father was John Pocknell and his mother was Mary Ann North. His paternal grandparents were Henry Pocknell and Sarah Holden; his maternal grandparents were William North and Mary Coad. He was the second of three children. He had a brother and a sister, named Henry and Mary.
