William was born on January 26th, 1837 in Surrey, London and was baptised on February 26th, 1837 in St Mary, Newington, Surrey, London. William's father was William North and his mother was Mary Coad. His maternal grandparents were John Coad and Ann Hender. He was the fifth of six children. He had five sisters named Martha, Mary, Harriet, Elizabeth and Louisa.
