Ion, known as Nelu, was born on June 5th, 1925 in Mizil and his christening took place there conducted by the priest.  Nelu's father was Ioan(Ionel) Popovici and his mother was Victoria Ionescu Popovici.  His paternal grandparents were Constantin Popovici and Pauna Popovici; his maternal grandparents were Vasile (Cutitarul) Ionescu and Aneta Ionescu. He had a brother and two sisters, named Puiu, Tanti and Olga.  He was the youngest of the four children.  He died from cancer at the age of 73 on June 10th, 1998.  His body was entombed in Ploiesti.
