  • SUNBURY — Magisterial District Judge and Attorney Carl B. Rice, 49, of Sunbury, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, July 22, 2011, at his home with his wife by his side.
    
    He was born May 18, 1962, in Sunbury, and was a son of Mary Elizabeth Braun Rice and the late Attorney Francis W. Rice.
    
    He graduated from Shikellamy High School in 1980, and was actively involved in the drama club and had a role in play productions.
    
    He then attended Penn State University and graduated from West Chester University. He became a trained paramedic, graduating from the paramedic program at Williamsport Hospital, and was a paramedic in Philadelphia for several years.
    
    He received his law degree from Dickinson School of Law. He was a partner of the Wiest, Wiest-Benner and Rice law office and a magisterial district judge of court 08-3-04, both in Sunbury.
    
    He was a member of the Northumberland County Bar Association, Pennsylvania Narcotics Officers Association, Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association, Top Gun faculty, Fraternal Order of Police, Sunbury Social Club, American Legion Post 201, Masonic Lodge 22, and B.P.O.E. 267, of which he was a past exalted ruler. He served as solicitor for the Americus Hose Company, Eastern States Vice Investigators Association and Point Township Zoning Hearing Board and taught criminal justice classes at McCann School of Business. He was one of the founding members of the Montour-Northumberland County Drug Task Force.
    
    He is survived by his wife, the former Toni L. Gearhart; two daughters, Elyse W. Rice and Laura D. Rice, both of Sunbury; a grandson, Jordan J.F. Rice, of Sunbury; a sister, Melinda Rosini and her husband, Attorney Anthony Rosini, of Sunbury; two brothers, Francis W. Rice and his wife, Michelle, of Mechanicsburg, and Frederick W. Rice and his fiancee, Illeana Diaz, of Homestead, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.

    RICE — Magisterial District Judge and Attorney Carl B. Rice, 49, of Sunbury. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. today at the Northumberland County Courthouse. There will be another memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday in Cameron Park, Sunbury. All friends and family are invited to attend.
