Israel's father was Yaakov Zvi Ziffer and his mother was Henna Yenta Graup.  His paternal grandparents were Ziffer and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were  Isak Graup and  ? ?.  He was the eighth of ten children.  He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Yehuda, Shalom Yosef, Eli, Yona from Kniazpol, Shelomo, Yigal, Mordecai, Klara (Miriam Chaya) and Faige Ita.
