Maria was born on November 25th, 1944.  Maria's father is Sebastião Araújo Mota and her mother was Adalgisa Mendes Mota.  Her paternal grandparents are Francisco Fernandes de Araújo and Adelina Ferreira Mota; her maternal grandparents were Pedro Alexandre da Mota and Maria das Dores Mendes. She had eight brothers and four sisters, named Consuelo, José, Francisco, Geraldo, Élcio, Sebastião, Antônio, Domingos, Ângela, Maria Aparecida, Neusa das Graças and Adelina.
