José  was born on February 21st, 1944.  José 's father was Antônio Araújo Mota and his mother was Eli Mendes.  His paternal grandparents are Francisco Fernandes de Araújo and Adelina Ferreira Mota; his maternal grandparents were Pedro Alexandre da Mota and Maria das Dores Mendes. He has two brothers and five sisters, named Geraldo Majela, Francisco, Maria Perpétua, Maria das Graças, Maria Madalena, Maria Aparecida and Maria do Carmo.  He is the oldest of the eight children.
