John was born in 1857.  John's father was John W.  Shields and his mother was Elizabeth Kemp.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Kemp and Harriett Bradley. He had a brother and two sisters, named Henry, Mary and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
