James was born on June 10th, 1881 in Hamburg, Ark (Ashley Co).

James' father was James Preston Goyne and his mother was Laura Jane Tatum. His paternal grandparents were Hiram Davis Goyne Sr. and Susannah Lupo. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, John, Harvey, Susie, Minnie and Ardeller. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Benjamin and Effie. He died due to a medical problem at the age of 74 on April 4th, 1956 in Dermott, Ark (Drew Co). The funeral took place in Collins, Ark (Drew Co).
