John was born in 1862.  John's father was Ely M.  Miles and his mother was Martha Kemp.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Kemp and Harriett Bradley. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Hardy, N.Sylvanus, Armenta, Anna and Louella.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
