Robert was born in 1872 in Birkenhead.1   Robert's father was Richard Whitehead and his mother was Ann Bamford. He had four brothers and a sister, named Richard, Albert, Harold, Boland and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Elliott.
