Elliott was born in December 1896 in Birkenhead.1   Elliott's father was Richard Whitehead and his mother was Charlotte Jane Morgan.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Morgan and Martha Holt. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Robert, Richard, Albert, Harold, Boland and Elizabeth.
