Mary was born in June 1872 in Rawtenstall.1  Mary's father was James Walton and her mother was Jane Knowles Barrow. She had two sisters named Nancy and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the three children. She had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, John, Walter, Fred and Alice.
