Ernest was born in September 1889 in Birkenhead.1  Ernest's father was John Turner and his mother was Alice Martha Pritchard.  His paternal grandparents were James Turner and Sarah Turner. He had three brothers and a sister, named Calvert, Tom, Archibald and (Sarah).  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had three half-brothers named William, Richard and John.
